Come April 22—the international date for Earth Day—Whole Foods will no longer offer plastic bags to its customers. Instead, paper bags from 100 percent recycled paper will be offered in four sizes, free of charge. Customers will also have the option of purchasing bags made from 80 percent recycled plastic bottles for $0.99 or canvas bags, ranging from $6.99 to $35. Whole Foods continues to support those who bring their own bags by subtracting $0.05 to $0.10 off the bill for each one used. The company estimates this decision will prevent approximately 100 million plastic bags from circulating between April 22 and the end of the year. Plastic bags take roughly 1,000 years to break down in a landfill whereas paper only takes 2-5 months.
