Yale University President Richard C. Levin announced over a two year span Yale has reduced greenhouse-gas emissions by 17 percent. This was achieved by the installation of automated and more efficient heating, cooling and lighting systems in 90 out of about 300 buildings. Students contributed to this effort by unplugging dorm room electrical devices when not in use, resulting in a 10 percent energy reduction. Yale’s long-term goal is to cut emissions 10 percent below the levels in 1990 by 2020. In order to achieve this goal, the university will have to cut emissions by 43 percent from the levels in 2005.
