The United States placed eighth in the Group of 8 and 39th among the 149 countries in an international ranking of environmental performance conducted by researchers at Yale and Columbia Universities. The analysis takes into account sanitation, greenhouse gas emissions, agricultural policies, air pollution and 20 other factors to form a composite score out of 100. The U.S.’s score of 81 this year indicates a steady decline from when the rankings were first issued in 2002, a reflection of low performance on greenhouse gas emissions analyses and regional smog to name a few. The top 10 countries this year include Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Austria, France, Latvia, Costa Rica, Colombia and New Zealand, all with scores of 87.0 or better.
