Sustainability in Building Codes, the first U.S. standard for high performance buildings, may be released by the end of 2008. This standard will outline requirements for new high-performance commercial building designs and building renovations addressing energy efficiency, atmospheric impact and water use efficiency to name a few. The Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, designed by Atlanta-based American Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) in 2007, helps engineers conserve energy by upgrading minimum building envelop requirements. Both standards cater to “net-zero” energy buildings, those that annually offset their energy consumption with energy production for the utility’s power grid.
