Around 30 contaminated barrels from a superfund site on Store Avenue in Waterbury were recently removed by Environmental Protective Agency (EPA) contractors and shipped to Massachusetts. In the late 1980s, the 6.8-acre site was found to be contaminated after a construction project began on the plot. The EPA displaced 2,300 tons of soil with nickel, zinc and other chemical contaminants from the site and fencing it off from the public. Although the contaminants were largely eradicated in this initial effort, the removal of the barrels is the first act toward cleaning this site in almost three years.
