The Ridgefield Public School district recently received the 2007 Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The program to improve air quality was initially launched by Ridgefield in 2003. Since that time, there have been marked improvements, which include cleaner and drier school buildings, less students visiting the school nurse for breathing difficulties, fewer teacher and staff health problems, and a decrease in absenteeism among many. The award has been presented to seven school districts nationally and recognizes exceptional commitment to indoor air quality management. It was created by the EPA after studies indicated an increasing prevalence of asthma, allergies, respiratory problems, headaches and nausea among schoolchildren.
