Bristol is piloting a single-stream recycling project in the city’s southeastern corner. Single-stream recycling, a system that has been largely popular in western and midwestern states for years, entails putting every recyclable item into one 95-gallon bin, which are later separated at a processing center. The results are beneficial to all parties. While most New England residents must separate paper and cardboard, this system simplifies the process. Increased convenience encourages increased recycling. Moreover, single-stream can eliminate roughly 50 percent of the expenses for collection trucks and workers as eliminating a ton of garbage is about twice as costly as a ton of recycling. The Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority, in addition to the state Department of Environmental Protection, will monitor Bristol’s results to see if the system will be expanded to all 20,000 households in the city.
