The city of Stamford may receive a fine for several violations for its Harborview Drive transfer station cited by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). The DEP’s Waste Engineering and Enforcement Division cited the city for violating its permit and the state’s solid waste management regulations by failing to remove the trash from the transfer station within 48 hours, failing to notify the DEP within 24 hours of a shutdown and failing to submit quarterly reports for the last three quarters of 2007 with details of the origin, type of waste and quantity received. City Director of Operations Ben Barnes plans to challenge any imposed fine. Barnes says that some of the DEP’s information is inaccurate and that the garbage was removed within 48 hours. Additionally, Barnes says the transfer station was never shut down, just slowed because of equipment jams. Copies of the quarterly reports were found in the city’s files and provided to the state.
