Six schools within the New Haven School System may receive new energy plants that could potentially save $1 million over the course of 10 years. The generators are powered by natural gas and produce steam, which can be used to heat water, especially the indoor swimming pools five out of the six schools have. Only about five percent of the schools’ energy needs can be met by these generators. Aegis Energy Services will install the generators free of charge, but would own them, selling power back to the schools. The schools to possibly receive plants include Conte/West Hills Magnet School, John S. Martinez School, Hill Regional Career, James Hillhouse and Wilbur Cross high schools and the Sound School. New Haven will be the first school district in Connecticut to utilize such technology.
