The Connecticut Department of Education announced the state intends on purchasing approximately 200 acres on the west end of Suffield for $3.1 million in an effort to preserve the land as a habitat for endangered wildlife. Although the land, located on the east side of Babbs Road, was initially purchased from the General Cigar Co. Inc. by the Conservation Fund, a Virginia based nonprofit, the organization wants to sell the land for the same price it was purchased at. The Conservation Fund bought the parcel to essentially take the land off the market until the state can produce the necessary funds. The land is of particular importance to species of grassland birds such as grasshopper sparrows, upland sandpipers and eastern meadowlarks that are declining in the wild.
