Department of Environmental Protection regulations require old oil tanks in six Vernon school buildings be replaced, as they are all 20 years old. If the tanks are not replaced, and they are discovered to be rotted and leaking, the state could impose harsh fines. The total cost to replace all six tanks would be approximately $1.5 million, although the board of education may only need to pay 30 percent with 70 percent of the cost eligible for state reimbursement. Tests are being conducted to determine to see if there are any structural problems with the tanks and if they remain viable. The results will show how much the board will need to allocate for capital improvements for next year’s budget.
