Several months ago, 17 out of the 35 companies regulated by the federal Clean Water Act were found to be operating with expired permits and were discharging toxins at higher rates than new permits allow. The Connecticut Fund for the Environment, a New-Haven based nonprofit agency that advocates environmental issues, threatened legal action against five of the companies. Recently, the state attorney general announced only one company will be sued while the other four will pay approximately $600,000 each in reparations. The four companies that settled include Electric Boat of Groton, which discharges into the Thames River; Whyco Finishing Technologies LLC of Thomaston, which discharges in the Naugatuck River; and Allegheny Ludlum and Cytec Industries of Wallingford, which discharges into the Quinnipiac River. The lawsuit was filed against Atlantic Wire Co. of Branford, which discharges into the Branford River, and is seeking $25,000 for each of the 21 illegal discharges of toxic waste into the river since December 2005.
