Old Saybrook is in the process of upgrading old septic systems within the town’s beach communities, which will be aided by a $300,000 grant. The money comes from a total of $13.2 million in Small Cities Community Block grants after a lawsuit of almost two decades was finally settled. This effort, called the “on-site wastewater management district” will circumvent building a centralized and costly sewer treatment plant and will address individual septic tanks on approximately 2,000 waterfront or beach properties. While the cost of the sewer upgrades or new sewer instillations can range from $2,000 to $25,000, the grant will go towards interest-free loans to those who need financial help affording them.
