New England Gets a Green Star for Building Smart

New England Gets a Green Star for Building Smart

While planes, trains and automobiles are indeed culprits when it comes to carbon emissions, few people realize that commercial buildings are responsible for 18 percent of our nation’s total carbon emissions. Recently, EPA gave accolades to the top performing buildings in New England that have earned the prestigious ENERGY STAR label for superior energy performance.  These award-winning buildings represent over 38 million square feet, save an estimated $52 million annually in reduced energy bills, and prevent over 400 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, equal to the annual emissions of approximately 1 million vehicles.

“Across New England, businesses and organizations are stepping forward to brighten our nation’s future by making smart decisions that are good for the environment and good for the bottom line,” says Robert Varney, regional administrator for EPA’s New England office. These facilities have shown innovation, good management and a commitment to leading the way with a new generation of environmentally-preferable building management practices.”

Buildings that earn the Energy Star use nearly 40 percent less energy than average buildings and emit 35 percent less carbon dioxide. The program, now jointly run by Energy Star and the EPA, started in 2006. Since then, saved $14 billion on energy bills and reduced 37 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, which is the equivalent of taking 25 million vehicles off the road for one year.

Whether you’re a home owner, property manager, developer or contractor, you’ll find the tips you need to save at www.energystar.gov .
